My Inspiration

Welcome to the May Carnival of Natural Parenting: Role model

This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Carnival of Natural Parenting hosted by Code Name: Mama and Hobo Mama. This month our participants have waxed poetic about how their parenting has inspired others, or how others have inspired them. Please read to the end to find a list of links to the other carnival participants.

It's carnival time again and this month I'm supposed to write about how I've inspired others to parent naturally. However, I'm not sure I've been much of an inspiration... More like a cheerleader to friends who have already decided to use various kinds of natural parenting. So rather than writing about what I've done to inspire others to follow in my footsteps, I'd like to write a few short letters of thanks to those who have inspired me.

To Natalie and Aliceann -
You two rock. Two of my best friends who both had babies within 6 months of mine and you both breastfed. Knowing that some of my closest friends were preceding me in that, especially that you were going to be continuing as I was beginning, was amazing. It really made me sit up and think about what a big choice it is to decide to breastfeed.

I'm so glad I did too! Kairi is 13 months old and still breastfeeding like a champ! I am now a breastfeeding advocate, attending La Leche League meetings in another town and working towards becoming a leader so some friends and I can start our own local group and help other women.

To Annie at PhD in Parenting -
I don't even know where to begin. One day not even a month after my daughter Kairi's birth, I StumbledUpon your Economics of Breastfeeding post. Before that I hadn't TRULY begun to see what I was doing for my daughter other than giving her what was natural. I read up more and more about breastfeeding after that, which further led me to become the lactivist I am today.

And then you exposed me to the Nestle Boycott. I had no idea what a terrible, horrible company they are and I am still learning more and more about them and their horrible morals.

To my March Mommies -
You all have been so great. It's such a great resource I have in you, that we all have babies the same age. It seems that most of us share a lot of the same principals and it's been great being able to lean on one another for support when needed.

Jessica and Nikki -
You girls exposed me to the wonderful world of fluff. My goodness. What an addiction. I told Jason that it would cost less to use cloth diapers and I find myself making excuses to by more each month. Haha!

Tori and Andrea, as well as the rest of the Birth Connections and La Leche League Ladies -
It's so great getting to know you all! I'm loving learning more and more about natural parenting and getting to attend structured groups where we can discuss different areas of parenting and childbirth and pregnancy.

Twitter friends and everyone else who has ever supported me -
What a great support network you've been! I don't know what I'd do without you. Someone is always there when I need it thanks to you!

And to those who have argued against me -
Thank you for forcing me to further research my points, only further validating my faith in them!

I hope I've not forgotten anyone. If I have, it's certainly not intended.

It is interesting how many names I can come up with when I sit and think about who has inspired me. Sometimes it's because of a small action that these persons may not even remember doing. Sometimes it's just because of the way they live their lives. Who knows how many you've inspired on your journey? I hope one day they let you know too.

Moments after posting this, I remembered about 5 or 6 other people I wanted to add.

I certainly hope that I've inspired (or am inspiring) others to parent more naturally.

I love the reference to those who have argued - it always makes my heart beat a little faster when I get a nasty comment or something that questions what I've written. But you're right - I end up researching more and educating myself more in the process!

I think the largest portions of the things I've learned have come from people who question or argue my lines of thought. So in a lot of ways, I owe them the biggest thanks of all for further validating my feelings towards how I'm living. :)

You sound surrounded by support, and I bet a lot of it was intentional on your part. That's so great. I've really loved getting to know you and other like-minded friends online, because where would I be without you all!

It can be hard and lonely when working on anything by yourself. Believe me, I'm just stubborn enough to have tried it. LOL. It's so much more reassuring to surround yourself with like-minded people than to run against the grain.
There aren't a lot of people in my area that do things the way I do so I'm so glad that I've been able to reach out online. It's great that there is such a wonderful group of women I can talk to.

This is proof that we all need each other to lean on for support, encouragement and even a heated exchange or two! :)

It's nice having the support we need - and whenever we need it! Twitter has been amazing in that. (and in the heated exchange department as well!)

How often do we remember to thank the people who've inspired us or give out compliments? One of the reasons it is so hard to accept a compliment gracefully is lack of practice. So it's great to model this and remind us all.

Having a supportive network both online and off is so amazing. It is great to have a community where breastfeeding, babywearing and gentle discipline is the norm, and it sounds like you've got a strong support network!
I wish I had natural parenting inspiration people! I hope that made sense lol. I always felt like the blind leading the blind. I had no one to talk to, especially with DS1.

You are so wonderful!

I'm glad that you've found support and inspiration. I bet you've provided it to others, too, even if you don't know it. People are watching what we do, and sometimes minds are being changed even if we don't know it.

Seems like you and I had the same idea this month. Thanking those who have inspired us.

It's a good exercise, sitting down and thinking about it. I also emailed the people that I listed so that they would know, in case they aren't blog readers, that they were mentioned. So much fun to take a moment to pat others on the back and let them know how much of an impact they've had on our lives and parenting.
Thank you so much for the mention in this post. It made my day! I hadn't seen it before you mentioned it in your comment on my blog. Thank you!!!! :)
I just love "And to those who have argued against me -
Thank you for forcing me to further research my points, only further validating my faith in them!"
I am so exactly just like that. This is a lovely way to thank people!

Acknowledging how others help us to grow is so important. It's a beautiful transaction whether you're thanking or being thanked! So thanks for sharing this with us all. :-)
